Some of you would know that a couple of months ago, I did a pretty amazing road trip around Peninsula Malaysia with the best travel companions I’ve ever had. We had a great time throughout, but out of all the places we covered, I’d daresay the general consensus was that our days spent on Penang Island was very hard to beat.
I spent a lot of time researching the accommodation that would suit us – There are plenty of choices when it comes to staying in Penang, but aside from comfort and location, I wanted a place that had a local touch for my Kiwi friends to experience, and that is why I’d like to tell you about 23 Love Lane.
I searched it up after a friend recommended this place to me, and I liked how the architecture of this boutique hotel fits the whole concept of Penang as a Heritage City – It’s multiple buildings are refurbished from what was originally a private residence back in the day and it really reminded me of the old Peranakan houses I’ve seen in Malacca.
It wasn’t just visually appealing, the best part is that it’s located right in the heart of Georgetown, making it very accessible to most of the places we wanted to explore.
Booking online was straightforward and correspondence was prompt and helpful. I was pre-informed that we got an upgrade to stay at the Stewart Suite as my initial choice was unavailable. I already liked the visuals I saw on their website, but upon arrival, I realised that pictures didn’t do justice to how spacious our place actually is – The five of us had a whole duplex to ourselves that included beverages, snacks, a fully equipped kitchen and even an outdoor jacuzzi!
Every corner of this boutique hotel had a rustic charm to it and you know that a lot of thought was put into its design. There’s different lounges for guests to use, including a small library if you’re looking for some quiet time amidst the hustle and bustle of Georgetown.
There’s an outdoor courtyard that links some of the different themed rooms and also to their in-house restaurant Steak Frites.
I must add that I didn’t have much expectations when I booked, so it was a pleasant surprise to be informed upon arrival that buffet breakfast is complimentary for us, including morning and afternoon tea!
If any of you are looking for a staycation in this heritage town, this place honestly exceeded my expectations. What stood out the most was how the staff exhibited the Malaysian hospitality I was hoping for my friends to experience throughout the trip.
Good things are meant to be shared, and this is truly a hidden gem in the city. Let me know how it goes if you ever decide to stay at 23 Love Lane!
